Each pack holds 50 round plugs, 1.5 in across, with a hole pre-formed in the top for a seed or a cutting. The plug is sphagnum peat moss and composted tree bark, held together by a foam binder into a soft sponge. It is soil-free and chemically neutral, so there is no buffering step before use. General Hydroponics also builds the media to support beneficial microbial activity around young roots. Prep starts with a soak of about 2 hours in water balanced near pH 6.0, or in a very mild nutrient solution. Squeeze each plug 4 to 5 times while it sits so water replaces the air in the center. Then press out the excess, since the target is thoroughly damp and never dripping. Set the plugs in a standard 10 x 20 in tray with no more than 1/4 in of water underneath. Cover with a humidity dome and hold the tray at 75 to 80°F, with 16 to 18 hours of light. A seedling heat mat closes the gap when the room runs cool.

Rapid Rooter Replacement Plugs for Seeds and Cuttings

Seeds go one or two to a hole, then a small piece torn from a spare plug caps the opening. That keeps them dark until they break through, and the dome comes off once seedlings emerge. Cuttings want a short growing tip taken on an angle, with the bottom leaves stripped. A rooting gel on the cut end helps, and the stem should meet damp media all the way round. An air pocket around the stem leaves the cut end dry and slows rooting. Roots usually show through the sides or bottom within one to three weeks. The whole plug then moves into coco, soil or a hydroponic system without pulling roots apart. Feed the young plant a diluted nutrient solution after the move. Water is the one real risk, because plugs left soaking under a dome lose their air and roots stall. Leftover plugs keep in an airtight bag or container, somewhere cool and dark.
