Netafim Grey Rod Mount Spray Stake, Double Pattern

Large nursery containers filled with coarse bark give a short plastic stake very little to grip. This stake, Netafim item 22500-005330, slides onto a 12 gauge metal rod pushed deep into the mix. The rod holds the head steady and lets it ride higher, which widens the wetted circle. Height can be set to suit the container and the plant instead of a fixed stake length. The head throws the double bow-tie pattern, so the stake goes close to the stem and sprays outward in two directions. Placed that way, it keeps water off the base of the stem, a vulnerable point for some species. The double pattern covers roughly twice the area of a single-sided spray, which suits very coarse mixes and large pots. Its spray angles downward just enough to keep water on the soil rather than over the pot wall. Shutting off one pot takes seconds: pull the tubing nipple from the top and plug it into the side port. The grey color identifies the flow, so a row can be checked from a distance. Each bag holds 50 stakes, and the metal rods are not included.

Building a 6.6 GPH Double Spray Stake Assembly

A complete unit is this stake plus one grey 6.6 GPH dripper assembly with a 36 in or 48 in lead. The dripper supplies the pressure compensation, a check valve and an inlet filter. Punch a 3 mm hole in the supply line, push the dripper in and attach the stake to the end of the lead. A 6.6 GPH stake suits containers from roughly 2 to 7 gallons. Operate the system between 22 and 55 psi, with 120 mesh filtration at the head. Spray radius runs 8 to 10 in with the head 3.5 in above the mix. At 48 in spacing and 35 psi inlet, a 16 mm supply line runs 176 ft and a 1/2 in poly line 224 ft. Moving up to 3/4 in poly allows 392 ft, and 1 in poly reaches 612 ft, about 153 pots. A zone of 1,000 stakes at this flow draws about 110 GPM, which sizes the valve and filter. The 12 gauge rods come in 8 in and 12 in lengths.
