Series 80 Globe Control Valve 12VDC for 12-Volt Systems

A lot of small irrigation automation runs on 12 volts: hobby relay boards, solar charge controllers and battery banks in remote sheds. This Netafim build puts a 12VDC solenoid on the 1-1/2 in Series 80 globe body, item 71610-014067. Apply 12 volts and the zone opens; remove it and the normally closed valve shuts. There is no pulse timing or polarity reversal to manage, which keeps the control side simple. The body is rated for 0.25 to 110 GPM at 7 to 150 psi, with water up to 140°F. Friction loss through the globe stays modest, around 4.3 psi at 60 GPM. Glass-reinforced polyamide forms the body, bonnet and seat, held by 304 stainless bolts around a 302 stainless spring. The housing measures roughly 6-9/16 x 6-1/2 x 6-3/8 in and weighs about 2 lb. Command water reaches the diaphragm chamber through a clog-free labyrinth inlet. Opening and closing are quick, and the diaphragm seals drip-tight at the end of a cycle.

Running a 12VDC Irrigation Valve Off Battery or Solar

The natural fit is a site where a 12-volt battery already powers lights, fans or a pump controller. One relay output per zone is all it takes to bring this 12VDC irrigation valve into that system. Keep in mind that the coil draws current for as long as the zone stays open. On a solar-charged bank, add up the run minutes per day and size the battery and panel with that load included. Long cable runs lose voltage at 12 volts faster than at higher voltages, so use heavier wire to distant zones. Mount the valve upright with the flow arrow pointing downstream, since the 2-way body is built for vertical installation. The flow control stem on the bonnet throttles the zone or shuts it by hand while you chase a leak. An integrated check valve holds the body shut until the coil is energised. If power fails mid-cycle, the valve closes, so a dead battery leaves the block dry rather than flooded. Recheck the battery voltage under load each season, because a sagging supply can stop the coil from pulling in.

Key Features

  • 12VDC solenoid: Switches from 12-volt relay boards, solar charge controllers and battery-backed panels.
  • Normally closed: The zone shuts whenever the 12-volt signal or supply drops.
  • 0.25-110 GPM range: Runs anything from a few drip laterals to a full block on one 1-1/2 in valve.
  • Flow control stem: Throttles or fully closes the zone by hand during balancing or repairs.
  • Clog-free labyrinth inlet: Feeds command water to the diaphragm chamber without a fine passage to plug.
  • Integrated check valve: Keeps the valve closed until the coil is energised.
