The ILS4 load switcher from Intelligent Growing Systems turns a 240V circuit of up to 40 A into four 240V outlets. Each outlet has its own 15 A breaker. A sense adapter plugged into any timer or controller switches the box on, so a low-cost timer can run high-amperage lights.

ILS4 Load Switcher: Four 240V Outlets From One Timer

The ILS4 is a load switcher from Intelligent Growing Systems, the company behind the Plug & Grow line. It lets a basic timer or controller switch lighting and other high-amperage equipment. The box takes a 240V supply, wired to the main electrical panel or to a 240V outlet on a breaker up to 40 A. On the output side it gives you four 240V outlets. Each outlet is protected by its own 15 A circuit breaker. The trigger side runs on 120V. A sense adapter plugs into the timer or controller you already use. When that outlet powers the adapter, the ILS4 switches on. The timer keeps the schedule, while the switcher carries the current. That way the heavy load never passes through the timer itself. An optional ILS4T timer adds a fixed or minimum ON delay of 0 to 20 minutes before the outlets power up. With the ILS4T-2 version, the outlets come on in two steps instead of all at once. The ILS4T is listed for the 241 model, which is this version with 240V outputs.

Wiring and Timing a 240V Lighting Controller

Wiring does not come in the box. Connect the switcher with a dryer or range cord, or wire it straight to the main panel. Use the cable gauge that your local electrical and building code calls for. Intelligent Growing Systems states that a certified electrician should do the wiring. Plug one fixture into each outlet so every lamp sits behind its own breaker. Then plug the sense adapter into your timer or controller and set the light schedule there. The ON delay earns its keep after a power failure or a brownout. HID lamps need to cool before they restart, and a hot restart burns bulbs out early. The delay holds the outlets off until the lamps are ready to strike again. A staggered start also lowers the power demand when the grid comes back. The ILS4T-2 brings the first pair of outlets up, then the second pair 30 seconds later. The same delay can hold back heating or air conditioning equipment after an outage. The timer's settings button can be reached without taking the switcher cover off. It can also be mounted up to 50 ft away from the switcher box.
