Gaia Green Greensand, Slow Minerals for Living Soil

Soil that has grown a few crops runs low on the minerals that compost alone does not replace. This greensand puts some of them back. It is mined from ancient deposits of oceanic sediment that hardened over time into glauconite. That mineral breaks down slowly, so it feeds the soil over a long stretch rather than in one hit. The guaranteed analysis reads 0-0-0.2, with 0.2% soluble potash. It also carries 0.5% magnesium, 1.0% iron and 0.05% manganese. Those numbers look small, and that is the point of a remineralizing amendment. The grains also work on soil structure, opening up porosity while helping the mix hold water. Greensand buffers soil pH, which helps keep a living soil stable between feeds. Because it is so mild, it will not cause root burn, even around seedlings. The 1.25 kg pouch covers a good run of containers and raised beds. Gaia Green recommends it for houseplants, lawns, greenhouses, nurseries and urban gardens.

Blending Glauconite Into Pots, Beds and Lawns

For a fresh batch of potting soil, blend in 3 tablespoons per gallon of mix. Turn it through evenly, then wet the batch and let it rest before planting. For established pots and planters, top-dress 2 tablespoons per gallon of soil. Dig it gently into the surface, up to once a month. In garden beds, broadcast up to 400 g per square metre and work it lightly into the top layer. That rate equals 8.2 lb per 100 square feet, and it can go down monthly through the growing season. Lawns take the same rate, followed by a thorough watering. Greensand pairs well with compost and other organic fertilizers in a soil-building program. It supplies minerals and structure rather than nitrogen or phosphorus. Pair it with a balanced feed if plants need a full nutrient program. Heavy clay soils gain the most from the extra porosity. Sandy soils benefit more from the improved water holding. Store the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place.
