FoxFarm Open Sesame 5-45-19 for the First Weeks of Bloom
Open Sesame is FoxFarm's early-bloom powder, a pH-balanced 5-45-19 blend made to carry plants from late veg into heavy bud set. Nearly half of the canister by weight is available phosphate. The label guarantees 5.0% nitrogen, all of it ammoniacal, with 45.0% available phosphate and 19.0% soluble potash. It also carries 2.0% sulfur, chelated iron at 0.15%, and chelated manganese and zinc at 0.05% each. Those come from ammonium phosphate, mono potassium phosphate, potassium sulfate, kelp and EDTA-chelated micronutrients. Because it is a dry salt rather than a liquid, a small canister goes a long way and nothing separates on the shelf. The powder dissolves fully into the final volume of water and leaves little residue in drippers or reservoir lines. FoxFarm rates it for soilless mixes, organic soils, hydroponics and aeroponic systems. This canister holds 1 lb (0.45 kg), sized for several runs in a tent or a small room. Low nitrogen keeps the push aimed at flowers instead of extra leaf.
Dosing a Soluble Fertilizer at Bud Set
Timing is the whole point of this blend. The label runs it from the first signs of bud set through the middle weeks of flowering. FoxFarm's own garden tip then moves growers on to Beastie Bloomz once buds have formed. Used alone in a hydroponic reservoir, the rate is one level teaspoon, about 6 g per gallon, with a flush every two weeks. Alongside a base nutrient, the dose drops to a quarter or half teaspoon per gallon. In soil and soilless mixes it goes in every other watering when it runs alone, or every watering at the reduced combined rate. At the full standalone rate this canister mixes roughly 75 gallons, and at the top combined rate about 150 gallons. Add the powder to the final volume of water and stir until the solution runs clear. Never blend it dry with other soluble salts, and keep it off the leaves, since the label rules out foliar use. Check EC after mixing, because a high-phosphate salt raises strength quickly in a light base feed. Adjust the dose to how the plants respond rather than chasing the chart.
Key Features
- Bloom-Starting Analysis: A 5-45-19 ratio puts phosphate front and centre while flower sites form and stack.
- Low Ammoniacal Nitrogen: Nitrogen stays modest, so the feed supports flowering without pushing a late burst of leafy growth.
- Chelated Micronutrients: EDTA-chelated iron, manganese and zinc stay available across a wide pH range in the root zone.
- Fully Soluble Powder: It dissolves clear into reservoir or watering can water and leaves little residue in lines.
- Any Growing Medium: The label covers soilless mixes, organic soils, hydroponic reservoirs and aeroponic systems.
- Concentrated Dry Format: A teaspoon per gallon at full strength means a one-pound canister lasts through several flowering runs.
