Common Culture Fan Speed Controller, Plug and Dial
Most single-speed fans move more air than a tent or small room needs, and they make plenty of noise doing it. This controller sits between the outlet and the fan and lets you turn that airflow down. It is a plug-in unit, with a three-prong plug on the back and one grounded outlet on the face. The fan cord plugs into the outlet, and the controller plugs into the wall. A single dial runs from OFF through LOW, MED and HIGH, with stepless adjustment in between. The rating is 120VAC and 3A, which covers about 360 watts of fan load. A tab at the top lets you hang it on a screw or a tent pole hook, off the floor and out of spills. There is no thermostat, timer or humidity sensor here. The dial is the whole control, so it suits a room where conditions stay fairly steady. With no app, probe or settings menu, there is nothing to program.
Running an Inline Fan Speed Controller in a Tent
In a tent with a carbon filter, many growers run the exhaust fan around the middle of the dial. That keeps negative pressure in the tent while cutting the drone that carries through walls. Turn it up through the warmest part of lights-on, then back down after lights-out. Check the fan's amp rating on its label before connecting it. A fan that draws close to the limit should run with headroom, not right at it. This dial works with standard AC fan motors, such as shaded-pole clip fans and many inline duct fans. EC fans that come with their own speed controller do not need it and should not run through it. Some AC motors hum at the very bottom of the range, so set the lowest speed where the fan runs quietly. Keep it away from humidifier mist and runoff, like any plug-in electrical device. For several fans, give each one its own controller rather than sharing one outlet.
Key Features
- Variable Dial: Stepless control from OFF through LOW, MED and HIGH on one knob.
- 120VAC, 3A Rating: Handles roughly 360 watts of fan load on a standard household circuit.
- Plug-In Design: Three-prong plug and one grounded outlet, so no wiring is needed.
- Hanging Tab: Hangs on a screw or tent hook, keeping it off the floor and away from water.
- Quieter Ventilation: Running a fan below full speed cuts the noise from exhaust and circulation.
