Botanicare Drain Tray, the Heart of a Modular Tray Run

Long greenhouse benches need one continuous tray, and a one-piece tray that size is hard to ship and harder to fit. Botanicare solves that with modular sections that seal together on site. This section, part number HGC706009, is the one that carries the drain. It measures 67.0 x 46.8 in and stands about 4.7 in tall at the sidewall. The drain sits in a recessed sump near the center, dropping to about 5.7 in below the rim. A grid of raised pads across the floor keeps pots and slabs up while channels carry water toward the sump. One end has a 1 in overlap lip, where the next section seals on. The tray is molded from recycled black ABS, which resists bowing, cracking and leaking. Paired with one end tray, it builds a run of 90 to 126 in, depending on the end length. Every middle tray added in between extends the run by a further 60 in.

Building a Run Around a Hydroponic Drain Tray

Start with the drain tray where the return plumbing will be, then work outward. Add middle trays for length, and finish the run with an end tray of 2, 3, 4 or 5 ft. With a 5 ft end tray, runs step from 10 ft 6 in up to more than 100 ft in 5 ft increments. Overlap each joint and seal it with Bond Three tray sealant. One bottle seals about 16.75 ft of seam, which works out to roughly 3.7 joints on 4 ft wide trays. Let the sealant cure fully before the first flood. Set the punch-out drain screen over the sump to keep media out of the plumbing. The sections suit Botanicare's slide benches, and a drain tray plus a 2 ft end tray matches the length of a 7.5 ft bench. The same tray works for ebb and flow, drip to waste and lettuce rafts. Clean between crops with a peroxide-based cleaner, a stiff nylon brush and a thorough rinse. A light disinfectant pass and another rinse finish the job.
